.7.
Baki blinked when he stepped into the garden from the castle. He stared in wonder at the green grass, the formal trees and lush gardens. Well cared for flowerbeds were in abundant blooms and he could see lush bushes with red and black berries.
Hafr pointed towards three women walking down one of the wide gravel paths, accompanied by a white wolf.
‘Our Queen is there, Milord,’ Hafnr said simply. ‘Just walk towards her.’
‘Just walk…towards her? What of that…that wolf?’
‘Loki?’ Hafnr said with a smile. ‘That is Queen Rionna's White Wolf pup and will not attack unless told to. You will not be harmed.’
‘Comforting, I suppose,’ Baki said wryly. ‘And the protocol…?’
‘Bow and greet her. That is all. She is a wonderful woman and kind hearted with a devilish sense of humour.’
‘You are a loyal subject…’
‘No, I simply love her as do all,’ Hafr said calmly. ‘She has brought so much to our realm. I will leave you and will meet you in your quarters later so we may return to translation?’
‘That would be excellent, Hafr. Thank you.’
Hafr nodded and stepped back into the dark corridor. Baki stepped onto the gravel path and walked steadily towards the three women.
The women turned and Baki almost stopped with shock when he saw the beauty of the fair haired woman who was carrying an infant in a blue swaddle sling.
The other women were watching him. The stout one calmly but the other was peering at him intently and Baki immediately sensed that woman was a warrior. Ah, is that the woman who killed Dilara’s assassin so easily?
Ten paces from the women, Baki stopped and bowed gracefully. ‘Your Highness,’ he said clearly. ‘May I approach and present myself?’
‘Please do, Lord Baki,’ Rionna said with a smile. The white wolf looked at Baki but stayed by the Queen’s side.
Cautiously, with a wary glance at the taller of the other two women, Baki stepped forward.
‘Do you enjoy the beauty of flowers, Milord?’ Rionna asked.
‘I do, Your Highness…’ Baki was almost hypnotised by the queen’s beauty and strange eyes of blue and violet.
‘Then walk with me and we can enjoy the art of our gardeners.’
Baki walked beside the queen. He glanced at her, marvelling again at the fairness of her skin and the enigmatic eyes.
At that moment, the baby opened her eyes and Baki was startled by the similarity to the eyes of her mother.
‘I enjoy this garden but, soon, Warwick and I will go riding. It’s been so long since I have been in the saddle.’
‘You enjoy riding, Your Highness?’
‘I love it. Do you?’
‘I do enjoy the freedom and exhilaration that riding a good horse brings, Your Highness.’
Rionna studied Baki for a moment before smiling warmly. ‘Very nicely put, Milord. I am told you seek to write a history of the Northern Reaches, Milord?’
‘Yes, Your Highness. I am quite enthusiastic about the task.’
‘You seek to achieve this task for yourself and not in some payment for assistance? I say this as we do not require anything from you.’
‘I understand, Your Highness, but I am excited about this project.
